A HISTORY of READING

way

Reading has a history.

ROBERT DARNTON
The kiss of Lamourette, 1990

But who shall be the master?
The writer or the reader?

DENIS DIDEROT
Jaques le Fataliste et son maitre, 1796

We all read ourselves and the world around us in order to glimpse what and where we are. We read to understand, or to begin to understand. We cannot do but read. Reading, almost as much as breathing, is our essential function.

History of Reading, Alberto Manguel 1996
